Festivals

Filed under: The Rest, Rants - Administrator @ 10:05 am

Anyone going to Dour on Saturday the 14th of July? It’s the only day I’m going and I’m looking for someone who’s making the trip from Brussels / Halle and back that day. Disco Dalglish will be staying in Dour the whole festival but I’m way older and not fit anymore to do just that. And I’m planning on going to Blue Note / 10DaysOff too. Will go and see Cinematic Orchestra (need a ride for that too although I always can sleep over there if I need to) and Allen Toussaint (going with the folks to that).

Feel free to use this space to organise some carpooling to the festivals. Adding our share Kyoto ish.

In our "do some foreign festivals" trip we’re going to Nothinghill Carnival this year. Disco Dalglish has been raving about that a little too much for me to stay home this year at the end of August. Saw his pictures of immense soundsystems and stacks of speakers. I need to see and feel that myself.

Dyno / Citywurl

Filed under: Music, New Ish - Administrator @ 8:53 am

You might have seen him at our Ain’t No Half Steppin’ party with the Camo Bros or seen him perform solo at Jazzbreak opening for Soul:ID. You might have bought his CD or spotted him on Rushhour’s Beat Dimensions compilation. Dyno’s hot pour le moment. For those still needing an introduction there’s an easy and legal way now. Dyno and his label Citywurl are giving away a free EP. Well it’s free to download. Check it Out.

And don’t hesitate to check Citywurl’s label boss Billy Palmier’s work too. He’s a very nice guy and he deserves all the props we can give him for starting a label with this kind of music in Belgium and doing that properly.

You can buy the CD’s on citywurl at Lost in Music Records, Plattesteen 3 – 1000 Brussels.

Last weekend

Filed under: The Rest, Nightlife, Reviews, Rants - Administrator @ 8:37 am

Kept it calm this weekend. Took some time to reinstall my laptop on Friday. It’s all ready to tape some mixes. Hope to get that done this week. Promised some mixes for the road to Southport. Maybe I’ll Podcast one or two of those mixes later on.

Started Saturday very early for once. Bought a new headphone. My Pioneer HDJ-1000 broke and getting it fixed would cost more than a new one. I’m done with Pioneer. Crap quality. Got myself a Sennheiser HD25. Looks like it is better suited for rough use on the road. Sound’s top notch and it’s light as a feather.

Digged trough a lot of vinyl Saturday. Joel aka DJ ReeDoo from United Music had bought someone’s collection. Found among other things the “Soulsalsasoul” remix from St-Germain. A classic. Didn’t really plan on buying vinyl but Orbit DJ was still closed at noon so I killed some time at the nearest shop. Being United. In the afternoon picked up a lot of vinyl at a friend’s place. Extended my collection with a couple of hundred pieces. Ace pieces. Some 70’s rock, some Jazz, some Soul. Will take me a while to go through all of that but the first few things I listened to made me more than happy. Donovan’s “Get Thy Bearings” is on a constant rerun.

After a most enjoyable diner at ReSource (Rue du Midi, absolutely recommended) went to Le Tavernier for the Wonderful party with Cris Prolific. As always a great party. Due to the fine weather it took a while to get started but even if it is too hot to dance it’s a fun place to be. Nice people to chat with, lots of beer to drink. Didn’t stay too long. A bit tired from getting up early. But enjoyed the night very much.

Sunday was horizontal. Just chillin’. Big up to Sporting. The competition should’ve been decided this weekend if it wasn’t for a lame referee handing out early Christmas gifts to Genk. But even that won’t keep us from the title.

And up until Thursday June was almost a blank month in our DJ agenda. But not anymore. 2nd of June we’ll play at DJ ReeDoo’s Le Bateau Ivre party if the edition next week goes well and he gets an OK from the venue. The week after that is still a blank but the 2 weeks after that it’s private party time. Private parties are the best. Chilling out with friends. Not too much stress for the dancers nor DJ’s. Just everybody enjoying themselves.

Homerecording

Filed under: Music, Tech Talk - Administrator @ 12:26 pm

Stumbled upon this site about homerecording (sorry, only in Dutch). Great source of info on the subject. As well technically as legally. Check it out.

Further on the subject. What software / hardware do you use to record mixtapes? And to edit mixes or songs?

Summer & Music

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - Administrator @ 1:11 pm

I will try to catch more festivals this year than last year. Only went to Festiv’Halle, Bruksellive, a little Blue Note and Pukkelpop last year. The first 2 because we played there, the last only to see Tortured Soul (of which I missed the first half because we got there too late). Somebody needs to bring that band over, by the way. They are insanely good. Anyway. This year I need more music. I will check more nights at Blue Note festival for sure. I will go to Dour for the first time in my life probably. Might catch some dj’s at 10DaysOff if that fits in my agenda with the previously mentioned festivals and with the one I’m really looking forward to.

And that’s St-Paul Soul Jazz Festival. Once did a sort alike festival in Toulon (with James Taylor Quartet and Lefties Soul Connection) and that was a blast. Sun, booze, lovely people and ace music. What do you need more. Made some very good friends there. Hope to do that over again. With some of the guys from Toulon and some new ones.

Foreign festivals are the bomb. Southport in 2 weeks. Need to record that mixtape I promised to everyone, so they can get prepared on the roadtrip to the north of England.

Highly on my to do list. Candela festival in Puerto Rico. Looks like heaven.

A big hooray for Sonar Kollektiv. The Christian Prommer version of Derrick May’s “Strings of Life” landed in the quality vinyl shops in your neighbourhood. It’s a jazz trio styled version of one of the ultimate Techno classics. Go buy it. Drumlesson – Strings of Life. It’s a really big one.

Saint Bar Cancelled

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Soundsystem - Administrator @ 8:28 am

Shit goes fast. The gig, this Friday, at The Saint Bar is cancelled. Will happen later.

JH Eenders - 13 Years Young

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Nightlife, Soundsystem, Recommended - Administrator @ 8:14 am

The first weekend of May JH Eenders will celebrate its 13th anniversary. On Friday with some Hiphop concerts and a ditto party. There will be gigs by Brussels group Le Rezo, Limburgs finest N.O.M. and Pita, the sole Belgian Hiphop artists popping up in the mainstream every once in a while. I don’t think Leki and that black guy from Leuven are Hiphop by the way. The party will have Vega and Onda Sonora’s Disco Dalglish as hosts. BLA won’t make it. He needs to be somewhere early Saturday morning.

On Saturday there’s a contest between some local youth organisations in the afternoon and another party at night. It will be one of JH Eenders infamous “Mix the dj’s”. A party where all regular dj’s of the youth centre will play with each other but not in the usual formation. Not Disco Dalglish and BLA together but in tag team mode with other dudes playing entirely other music. It’s one of the few times we get completely politically incorrect musically.

Hej

Filed under: The Rest, Rants - Administrator @ 8:05 am

Took some days off. The weekend was heavy to get recuperated from. Helped a friend doing construction work and didn’t sleep all that much. But now I’m getting my energy back.

Keep On last Saturday wasn’t the best edition yet. Not too much people showing up outside of the Dali’s bar regulars and some tourists. Our friends all stayed home on the same day it seemed. Music was mighty fine though. Daquan playing an ace set, Djé building up in fine form as always and Brekbit showing who’s the true disco don in Belgium. I myself kept closed the party. Or better said, I played until the cops closed the party. Dali’s bar has got a big problem with neighbours complaining about the noise. Hope they get that fixed soon. A party needs volume and can do without the boys in blue (even if it was 5 o’ clock in the morning).

Up to next weekend. Playing at The Saint Bar in Halle alongside Rikkie on Friday. Hope they attract a little more people than last time. Because the place has potential.

DJ Deep Podcast

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - Administrator @ 7:58 am

DJ Deep is one of our favourite House DJ’s / labelbosses. Keeping real House music alive. Check him out if he’s DJing somewhere near you, dig for his Deeply Rooted or House Music Records releases in your local recordshop. He’s got a very good Podcast highlighting his deepness when it comes to music. With tracklists and little comments. Just the way we like it. You’ll find the Podcast under, logically, "Internet Mixshows".

Thought we might bring this up again now we got our computer back and can listen to it properly.

Nice looking flyer for one of our upcoming gigs. Well, it’ll be a BLA only gig because Disco Dalglish will be hiking in the wild nature that weekend. Playing with Jonathan is always fun.

Mo & Grazz

Filed under: Nightlife, Reviews - Administrator @ 10:43 pm

It was lovely at Le Tavernier. Not so much because the music was top notch. It sounded more than allright but due to the place being too crowded I escaped to the bar in the back with Strictly Niceness’ Kwak. Had a nice chat. But I digged this evenig mainly because there was so much family. Alex, Wikke, Lefto, Kwak, Vega, Proceed, Ugo, … always feeling like home from the first few steps these Jazzbreak sessions. Mo & Grazz sounded swell. Couldn’t tell it was one of the first times with the full live band. But I experienced it all from the back. Loved their take on Kindred the Family Spirit’s "Rhythm of Life’. Especially because they covered the King Britt mix. Big up for that. Philly in the house. And in the "Spot the BV series". After Pim at Onda Sonora, Kate Ryan at Jazzy Jeff, it was time for Leen Demaré at Jazzbreak. Lets make this a habit. Spotting the odd one out.

Grandmaster Jazzy Jeff

Another promo clip from a Hiphop legend. Putting his scratchingskills in the spotlight. But he’s so much more than this. Party DJ extraordiaire. Would like to see him playing for a public of connaisseurs. Yep, at Southport babies.

Mo & Grazz at Jazzbreak

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - Administrator @ 11:42 am

This Wednesday it’s Mo & Grazz with a full live band at Jazzbreak. Lefto & Brown Moshunz behind the decks before and after the concert. This one’s firmly recommended by Onda Sonora. Be There. Jazzbreak is at Le Tavernier in Ixelles.

Mixer

Filed under: Music, Tech Talk - Administrator @ 11:30 am

Both Disco Dalglish and myself are planning on buying a new mixer for home-use. On top of that JH Eenders where all Onda Sonora events take place needs a new mixer. We do have an idea of what we want but it’s always nice to hear other opinions. Which mixer do you prefer and why.

Oh, and please leave the corny “A Moulinex” jokes behind.

Some Music You Should Check

Filed under: Music, New Ish, Classics - Administrator @ 11:21 am

"Tawiah - Watch Out". This one’s been a favourite of our favourite BBC DJ’s Gilles Peterson and Benji B. New Soul (not Nusoul) which has more affinity with true Soul than with RNB. Ethereal (if that’s a word) music that touches the Soul. In other words what music should be to be titled with the big S-word. Check it out on her Myspace. It’ll get a proper release on Gilles Peterson’s Brownswood Bubblers 2 compilation.

Still in a big Gil Scott-Heron period. Check his live version of “Home is where the hatred is”. The original is on his masterpiece ‘Pieces of a man”. Absolute classic of the highest order that LP. Superb in its entirety but that song still stands out for me. This one goes deep. The live version on “It’s Your World” is more uptempo, more grooving. Still rules though. As did Masters At Work think when they sampled it to transform it in one of the illest House joints around.

Getting deep into Donny Hathaway too. You have to check “Extensions of a man”. One of the greatest albums I’ve heard. So deep. If you’re searching for his work, please check his “Live” album too. Best live album I know. The version of “The Ghetto” on it always blows my mind. Even the crowd is of the hook on it.

Next Strictly Niceness

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - Administrator @ 12:00 pm

The Onda Sonora crew won’t make it because we’re in Southport but everybody who has nothing to do should be there. Ubernice flyer. With lovely colours.

And hopefully they’ll show you their wicked banner next time. Designed by one SozyOne. It’s more than nice, believe me.

Heavy Soul

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - Administrator @ 11:30 am

A nice one coming from the Dyn-O-Mite boys & Petrol Club called “HEAVY SOUL”. Wednesday 16.05.07. The first Belgian vintage black music allnighter. 2 rooms with top DJ’s spinning Club Soul, authentic R&B, deep funk, ska and dancefloor jazz :

PAUL WELLER (uk), KEB DARGE (Legendary Deep Funk, uk), EDDIE PILLER (Acid Jazz, BBC, uk), ANDY LEWIS (Acid Jazz, uk), THIERRY STEADY GO ! & SOULIGAN (Dyn-o-mite, Brussels), RIVERSIDE R&B club djs feat. AXEL, RULE & KRIS (Antwerp) and OLE SOLLIED & FLO (Petrol Club Soul sessions resident djs, Antwerp)

Petrol Club | ‘t Zuid, Antwerp, Belgium

This is a big one. It can’t get much better than this for Deep Funk, Soul and Mod Culture lovers.

Merci

Filed under: Nightlife, Reviews - Administrator @ 10:25 am

It was a lovely weekend. The weather being top, the music idem ditto. Most of the time. It all started perfect. Finding a big ass package from Rush Hour on my doorstep (I finally got "The Jaz – The Originators" on vinyl, woohoo), dining with friends and then heading for Antwerp to see Jazzy Jeff. Stereosushi was packed to the max again, though with a much younger crowd as usual. Still didn’t feel at home. Don’t know why but I can’t connect, on any level, with the people there. Last time I really felt at ease was at the Kerri Chandler gig when we had shipped a busload of friends to Antwerp and so had the Dutch bunch of party people next to us. We met a lot of those guys the week after at Southport, no wonder they knew to appreciate the music. But not this time. The fact that the resident DJ’s were utter crap (and I’m being very polite here) didn’t help. They served an overdose of Wacko Jacko. I can appreciate some MJ from time to time but this was ridiculous. We heard at least 15 songs from him in 3 hours time. The rest of their set was silly too. They just played the obvious. Don’t mind classics but I don’t want to feel like I’m at a Radio Nostalgie party. On top of that their mixing was awful. And you know those remixes on House twelves you wonder why on earth they are made or who ever plays them ? Well after Friday I know the answer to the second question and don’t understand the first even more. I’m sorry if I’m hurting someone’s feelings here but it’s impossible for me to be positive about it. But Jazzy Jeff was the only reason we made the trip. Once he got behind the decks a lot of what was bothering me seemed futile. The man’s a robot. Never misses a beat, mixes are perfect. You know singers who sound exactly as clear as on their CD’s live ? Well Jazzy Jeff is the DJ version of that. Listen to his mix CD’s and you know how he sounds live. Might seem obvious but in these times of computer edited mixes this is rare. Very rare. When I say he’s a robot, I mean a robot with a Soul. The main remark a have about Hiphop DJ’s is not that they don’t know what good music is or that they aren’t good technically. On the contrary, they know their shit better than most House DJ’s do. But I get too often the feeling they don’t know how to keep a party going. They are usually more collectors than dancers and that you can hear. Jazzy Jeff is one of the few to aims his sets straight to the dance floor. He might not play the most obscure gems but he plays good music, with great technique and a lot of feeling. I’m a fan. I only had hoped he would play a little more House. Saturday it was our turn to get behind the decks. At Strictly Niceness. A gig URE and myself were really looking forward to. It’s one of the few parties that oozes the same vibe as our own parties. The crowd’s always going for it, the spirit is like it should be and the music’s totally our thing. Got there early. A bit nervous. But once the music started it went all nice. Bernard Dobbeleer getting the crowd moving as always. We took over and went for it. Playing the tunes we wanted to play and seeing that people were digging it. Strictly Niceness has a killer crowd. It’s the only party I know were everybody is dancing. From the front to the back. We played a mix of Deep Funk, Hiphop, Soul, Disco and 90’s R ’n B. And it worked fine. Living on cloud 9 since then. A big, big thanks to Eleven, Kwak and Bernard. For giving us this chance and giving us the freedom and respect we got. We really appreciate it. We’re fans for life. And a big thanks to everybody dancing. It was an honour to pay for such an elite of the dance floor. Merci Lieve, Phil, the Wickywacky dancemachine (all the way from Lissabon), Dieter, Katlijne, Maarten, Fluppe, Chris, Jan, Lotte, Yoeri’s colleague, Midleft, Sistah, Jenna, Leentje & friends, DJ Reedoo and all those I don’t know by name or forgot to mention.
