Whatnauts re-edit

Filed under: The Rest, Onda Sonora, Soundsystem, Rants - Administrator @ 6:06 pm

The usual nervousness and impatience I experience everytime just before Southport. Nevertheless managed to arrange some nice things for parties to come. More about that after I’m back for England.

To kill the time and get myself and those in need of it in the mood for the weekend I’ve uploaded a little re-edit I did of The Whatnauts classic "Help is on the way" on our Myspace (will be visible in a couple of hours). Nothing fancy. Reconstructed it a little to keep things fresh and maybe a little dance floor oriented if that was needed. Enjoy.

Buy This

Filed under: Music, Buying Guide - Administrator @ 3:39 am

For those of you who like their hiphop a little abstract you need to check Heralds Of Change. A Scottish/Irish (as far as I know) producers duo with great sleeve artwork and beats to top that. Bloody genius beats by my standards. Even downloadable (if that’s a word) on iTunes in pretty decent resolution (256 kpbs). Check, check it out.

Other tips on that tip are the Louis Bordeaux LP on Appeltree Records (can’t get enough of that Galaxy tune - and for those of you buying the vinyl, you get a free download of the tunes you buy thrown in for free - nice one although it’s 128 kpbs) and Flying Lotus off course (too good for words that one).

Lefties

Filed under: The Rest, Nightlife, Reviews, Rants - Administrator @ 1:56 am

Went to see Lefties Soul Connection in the AB. Very nice concert. Ever so tight. Great one. Thanks to Dieter for offering me the ticket. Thanks to Maarten, Brice & Fluppe for the beers. Nice seeing some familiar faces. Thierry and Fred looked like they were enjoying every bit of the performance. En forme comme on dit. More of that.

And nice end of evening in the roskam. Love discussing with Dieter about life, music and women.

Thanks

Thanks to all who wished me a happy birthday yesterday. Appreciate that. A lot.

Oh, and keep an eye on my moblog. I will send pics every now and then. Like I did at Nothinghill Carnival.

Southport 41

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - Administrator @ 10:20 am

Only a few days away from musical heaven. We’re leaving early Thursday morning. 4 days of partying. Glad I’ve been swimming regularly resulting in a way better physique than a few months ago. No crashing at 4am Sunday morning missing Ron Trent, Osunlade or Joe Claussell in the process. Really looking forward to seeing Karizma (he was mindblowing in Antwerp - at SP they usually are better), Leroy Burgess, Marley Marl (next old skool legend I will have seen - only 246 to go), Sounds of Blackness, Al Kent, Henrik Schwarz and so many more. Especially looking forward to seeing and hopefully meeting some cats who have crossed our paths before like Rainer Trüby, Phil Asher, Aaron Ross end Mad Mats. And seeing our overseas party buddies like Phil Cooper, the Diep Huis crew and more. Hyped already.

A lot of people have told me they want to join us for the next one. No problem. We’ll book one of the weeks to come. Just mail me so I can coordinate and help. Because I’m not going to make the booking for everyone. You can’t expect me or anyone else to pay in advance for 20+ people. Haven’t got that kind of money.  But if we bundle the people in smaller groups and find partyleaders for every one of these groups, booking will go smoothly.

And for those of you wanting to know who will play at the 42nd edition of Southport in November. Got to advice you not to wait until they announce the roster. It will be sold out way before they announce even the first artist. Usually it’s sold out 4 months in advance. Read, in max 2 months that is. You can check what’s coming at this edition on the site. It will be just as good next time, no worries. Dates and prices for next edition are on the site too.

The Sunday Matinee

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Nightlife, Soundsystem, Recommended - Administrator @ 10:03 am

Here are the front and backside of the flyer (click on them to see them enlarged) for the Sunday Matinee at Charlatan, November the 25th. Main guest is Mike Dunn. A legend. All the tracks released under one of his many guises are banging and a lot of the banging Chicago House tracks I discovered, have, after a closer look at the liner notes, his name on it. Drop an MD track and the floor gets filled with dancing people. If you don’t know him I advise you to do some googling and learn. A real honour to open for this man.

What a Weekend

Filed under: Nightlife, Reviews - Administrator @ 2:33 am

It looked like it would be a wild weekend with 2 dj dates and a party organised by us. And, not surprising, it was what it promised to be. Although not entirely like I hoped / thought it would be. Sometimes your mind plays tricks on you. Friday we played at Café Bota. Big up to Yassin for the superb welcome and hosting. Utter most respect for that. The feeling both Yoeri and I had after the set wasn’t all positive, our judgment coloured by the many requests we got (do I look like a juke-box or something). But the feeling we had wasn’t in touch at all with the response we got from the people dancing. So, sometimes you can be completely wrong as a dj and follow the crowd a little more. certainly because a lot of the compliments we got were from people we respect more than a lot. So I guess it was an good night after all. You live and learn, innit ? Thanks to the Businghe / Evere posse. Love y’all and you (should) know it. Nice to see Nick and wive, Red D, Carlos, Kurt, Alex and some other unexpected guests. We appreciate that a lot.

Saturday it was our first reggae party. We didn’t dj ourselves but let that to Boomblast, Boom-&-Ranks and Jugglin’ Discotheque. Big up to all of them. It was a great night. Enjoyed it very much. Even if it was more of a "classics" night than a "digital" night. Loved every bit of it though. Good music is good music. Big respect though to Jugglin’ for keepin’ tight to our request. Nice to see some old friends like Fakkes & Marjan, Gerrit & Sigi, Tim, Nico, Yannick, Wout, and so many more. We’ll do this more often. Promised.

Sunday we gathered what was left of ourselves and dragged our asses to the Red Bar to play a set at Secret Sundays. Not that convinced it was a good idea at first but once we kicked off our set we loved every single little bit of it. Nice atmosphere, nice people. Went deep and got great response in doing so. What a collection of lovely people to play for. Big, big thank you to Carlos. Nice one, both playing for you and talking to you. Lots of kisses to Didier, Phil and Gil (for showing up and giving me the very nice t-shirt), to Lieve and Karl (for showing up after a busy weekend), to Virginie, Lucie, the barman, Freddee, Laurent, Mitch, Kwak, 72Soul, Sven and all those other lovely people, whose name I don’t know or can’t remember, present. A big up for those connecting through the internet. Daquan and others. Nice to see or hear you are not forgetting us. We respect that a lot. Extra special thanks to Peter and Sophie for being (indirectly but still fully) responsible for getting the chance to play at Secret Sundays.

And weird to notice you get almost immune to alcohol after 3 days of partying. Not that I drank that much but it hardly affected me today. But now I’m going to sleep. Mustn’t forget to do that because next weekend will be even harder. Southport Weekender. How I long to be there.

Kerstavond

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Parties - Administrator @ 8:58 am

A classic. Onda Sonora Soundsystem playing all night long aided by friends like A3N, Soul Rebel and others. Everybody in good form after dining with the family. Always fun. Free entrance.

1Love.

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Soundsystem - Administrator @ 8:54 am

On we don’t organise but we support it in any possible way. Like by playing there and designing the flyer. Check the flyer for more info about the guests. Really exiting that we’ll be playing with another House legend; Jovonn. And a local House legend; Rikkie. Is going to be a wild party, no doubt. Check the Myspace too.

Businghe Weekender 2

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Parties - Administrator @ 8:48 am

Time to announce some parties we’ve planned. In chronological order.

Second edition of our weekend. Needless to say we got most of our inspiration from that weekender we’ll be attending next weekend. The one in Southport. It will all be little smaller than our big example but it we’ll try to serve you just as much fun. And we’re proud of the line up we can present y’all. On Friday 30.11.07, after a good match of football where we surely will have showed the current leader in the competition who’s the boss, the guys from Strictly Niceness will honour us with a guest dj set. All three residents of Brussels’ leading souful party will be present. Kwak, Eleven and Bernard Dobbeleer. Which is a guarantee for a storming party with top quality music. We’ll add our own flavour to it all to make it even more swinging.

Saturday we’ll welcome Igwaar and Jonni Gratts from Moodclub as guests. Expect it all to be a little more 4/4 then Friday but just as soulful and funky. Moodclub is a driving force keeping real house music alive in Leuven, a city with a great tradition when it comes to that music (remember Food). It’s going to be banging no doubt.

Sunday we’ll go for that afternoon vibe we love so much at Southport. Just playing classics to fight that hangover. Combining those old school feel good tunes with being a little overemotional by the combination of not enough sleep and the results of drinking a bit too much. We’ll start at 6 in the evening and end at 11 so everybody can head home early to get the needed sleep before starting the work week again.

Entrance is 3 EUR for a night. We’ll think about some combo price where we throw in some mixtapes and free drinks to soften the financial blow. Entrance is free on Sunday.

Mad Mike Banks Interview

Filed under: Music, Knowledge - Administrator @ 11:30 am

I love Underground Resistance’s / Mad Mike Banks’ work and ethics a lot. Maybe not everything all the time but in general it’s fresh, inspiring and energizing. Tracks like ‘Jupiter Jazz’, ‘High Tech Jazz’ and all things on Happy records are some of my absolute favourite pieces of music. Love that "putting the music in front of ego’s" Detroit seems to have pattented (see also Moodymann).  Read this interview with Mad Mike Banks. It’s deep and it gives a good clear vision on what UR stands for and what Detroit is all about.

Secret Sundays

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Soundsystem - Administrator @ 9:18 am

To end our busy weekend in great style another party called Secret Sundays. This fine initiative supporting Brussels based dj’s has asked us to add our Soulful vibe to it. And that we will do with great pleasure. Expect a pre-Southport set filled with classics, bombs and other dance floor ditties. And we’ll be well warmed up for this after 2 days of enjoying the nightlife to the fullest. On top of this all I’ll be celebrating my birthday. 2 days early but who cares ?

From the early evening on ‘til we drop. At L’herbe Rouge / Red Bar Sushi restaurant, Rue des Minimes 34, 1000 Brussels. Starts at 7pm. More info here.

For those who can’t make it, the set will be broadcasted live here. Check it out.

SMiling

Filed under: Nightlife, Reviews - Administrator @ 8:35 am

That’s what I did all concert long. Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings always make me happy. Couldn’t stop smiling. At best, when those cool cats went on stage to do a little dance and some frontin’, I smiled so hard it started to hurt. The concert was good. Had a great time. So many cats present. Kwak, Kader, Skender, Phil, Lezze, Mats, Thierry, Fred, Funky Bompa, our little Schaarbeek crew and my brother from another mother Kurt and family. Nice vibe going on.

Makes me longing for the weekend (and the following days off + Southport) even more. Well, less than 2 days and we’re there.

Getting a good feeling about the Café Bota gig. Many people coming apparently. Big up to Dieter for spreading the word.

New Podcast Online

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Parties, Podcasts - Administrator @ 9:38 am

Thought I lost it uploading yesterday evening but seems like it succeeded anyway. So here it is.

There’s a new Onda Sonora Podcast online. Check it here. It’s a Disco Dalglish mix to prepare you for our next weekender end November / begin December. Mixing some deep Disco and House. More info on that weekender pretty soon. Although the flyer above this post gives away most of the info.

Playlist and other info will follow soon. But in the meantime you got some sounds from us.

Expect more pretty soon. I’ve recorded my Saturday set together with Jonathan at Dansbaar. It’s more than 4 hours long so I’ll first need to choose which part I put online. And the sound quality isn’t top all mix long.

Cafe Bota Stereo

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Soundsystem - Administrator @ 7:35 am

Been looking forward to this one a lot. Nice venue, good sound, very nice surroundings. And close to where we both live. We’ll select our finest tunes, play our latest discoveries and most irresistible dance floor goodies. Entrance is free so that’s another thing that can’t keep you from coming.

We would love to see a big crowd of friends. Always nice, off course, but it would help our ambitions in Brussels a lot. A packed house would increase the chances of playing at Café Bota (and other places) more than a little, it would give us confidence that organising our own night in Brussels is worth trying and it’s a chance to support the cause for more Soul in the nightlife of this city. I’m putting a lot of weight on all your consciousness, I know. But it would be fun to have a quality party in out hometown.

So bring all your friends. This Friday at Le Botanique’s café.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings

Filed under: Nightlife, Music, New Ish, Recommended - Administrator @ 7:31 am

Tonight Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings perform live in the AB here in Brussels. Always exiting because they are one of the more consistent and tight live bands I’ve seen the last few years. Their last gig in Belgium, at Het Depot in Leuven, didn’t blow me away like the first times I saw them but it still was good. And it blew those who hadn’t seen them away like it did me when I discovered them. In short, you need to check them at least once in your live.

They’ve got a new album out by the way. See the pic above and check some tunes on their Myspace. Buy it tonight or in a shop near you (or on the net). It’s worth every penny.

As an extra, here’s the Blog written by the drummer of the Dap Kings about the food they get served during the tour. Curious what they’ll say about the food at the Ancienne Belgique. It’s known for it’s fine backstage cuisine. Even got a book with recipes from their cook.

DJ Muro Mix

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - Administrator @ 5:38 pm

Those of you that don’t know dj Muro need some knowledge urgently. Get informed here, here and here. The last one is meant for the real fans. Anyway if you want to hear what’s the man like behind the decks check this mix. Top quality mix. Fingerlicking good.

Raw Fusion

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - Administrator @ 5:27 pm

Ace label (check latest Simbad & Future Beat Investigator releases - Tip!), a party that’s high on my "to do" list and now a superb source of quality mixes. Check their site and download galore. All fine quality mixes, ideal to keep your head fresh. Loving the Mad Mats House mix. For the Southport going peeps; check Mad Mats on the decks. Very good dj. Once went cratediggin’ with the man in Brussels. Like all Swedish dj’s I’ve met (the full 2) funny and gentle cat.

Rush Hour 10th Anniversary Release

Filed under: Music, New Ish - Administrator @ 12:58 pm

Our favourite shop cum label exists 10 years. We’ve had it before about this on this blog but now they are celebrating things with a special release. They’ve hunted down the track that inspired them when naming their company. A Population One (Terrence Dixon) tune called "Rush Hour", originally released on Claude Young’s Utensil label in ’95. Like those in the know already deducted from all the name dropping above it’s a techno track in a Detroit vain.

They’ve asked a couple of top producers (UR’s Rolando, Aardvarck and Convextion) to remix it and release it on 2, like always impeccably packaged, 12”s. And if the sound snippets are anything to go by with some storming result. Pre-order it at Rush Hour or but it digitally.

More info here.

Rough & Rugged

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Parties - Administrator @ 9:32 am

A little reminder for all you Jamaican music loving people. This Saturday we’re having our first real reggae party. Concentrating on the digital era. With Boomblast, Boom-A-Ranks and Jugglin’ Discotheque as guests.

Easy Does It

Filed under: Nightlife, Reviews - Administrator @ 9:31 am

A nice calm weekend behind me. Cut back on the partying and other wild stuff for once. With next weekend filled with 3 days of partying and Southport the weekend after that, taking it easy seemed like a good idea.
Picked up a tradition on Friday I neglected for too long. Diggin’ the Brussels vinyl crates after work. Scored a Cerrone, that mighty Coki & Benga tune, that genius Deetron (and the Osunlade mix) and that Patrice Scott Benji has been banging so much. Nice to enjoy the fun of sharing the love of music with others again. Eating at ‘t Kapiteintje afterwards is becoming another tradition.

Saturday I kept on going on that crate diggin’ vibe. Headed with Yoeri to Antwerp to do some hardcore vinyl shop fine combing. And with great result. Found things like Eddy Grant’s Time Warp and Frontline Symphony, the Bridgett Grace and Yolanda Reynolds 12’s on Happy (some old skool UR of the highest quality), The Controllers, Trussel, Rose Royce and more. Came back with over 50 good records.

Saturday I went to my old hometown Halle to play at the rather newly opened Dansbaar. Nice venue with a nice sound. Some freshness in a city that seems to be evolving slower than a dinosaur. The turn up wasn’t all that but I saw some shy ass shaking every now and then and I had a good time playing together with Jonathan. Always good fun, his skills are ever improving and he keeps selecting those gold tunes out of his massive crates. Added tunes by John Tejada and Herbert to my wish list. Big up to David and Jonathan.

Sunday was nice too. We finally won. Great to see Frutos slowly getting back to his old form.

Infintskills present: Nine

Filed under: Music, New Ish - Administrator @ 9:38 am

Some Belgian first class Hiphop productions pressed on vinyl. Brussels based beat makers crew Infinitskills have compiled a collection of quality sounds all made by producers who live in this funny little country. It’s called Nine and has beats on it from AME, Lefto, Luigi, Mr. Critical and many others. You can buy it on vinyl (soon) here. It’s released on that nice kid Billy Palmier’s label Citywurl. Highly recommended.
