My top 5 List

Filed under: The Rest, Rants - Administrator @ 12:06 am

Phil, who organised a dinner this evening asked me to bring my top 5 records of 2007. So I had a bit of thought about it and picked the 5 records that popped up first in my mind considering this question. I’ll give them to you in attendance of my extensive list for 2007.

1. Mala - Alicia
Lovestep or balearic Dustep or something. Bliss tune made by one of the Dubstep pioneers (of Digital Mystikz fame). Not really the usual dark, mermerising stuff but something between everything. Uplifting, chill and feel good track. Hard to find I guess because I only saw it as a white label at Sounds of the Universe. But the top tune of the year for me.

2. Theo Parrish - Sound Sculptures pt. 1
See elsewhere on this blog for lots of good words about it. A classic apparently rated just as good by Gilles Peterson and the Worldwide family.

3. Trus’Me - Working Nights
Actually just as good as Theo Parrish’ release. But maybe a little less pushing the boundaries. But that’s making remarks just to have a reason to rank it a little lower. Genius record from start to finish.

4. Kathy Diamond - Miss Diamond to You
Got to admit it’s ranked 4th because I thought of Theo Parrish and Trus’Me first. Numbers 2 to 4 are all on the same level. Reviewed them all on this blog. All instant classics.

5. Flying Lotus - Reset
It’s an EP so it’s only right it isn’t rated as high as the LP’s. But as all the rest a work of genius with no tracks I don’t like.

Heralds of Change and Bullion haven’t made the list but it was just by an inch. Next year they are certainly in it if they keep up their good work. Both released some fantastic music.
