Belgikolor Promo

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Soundsystem - BLA @ 1:54 pm

The promo campaign for Belgikolor will reach full momentum from next Monday on. Flyers and full website will be ready, we’ll do a guest mix on the Laid-Back radioshow on FM Brussel and they will drop those spray cans (see above) around Brussels which, if you find one and follow the instructions written on it, will get you on the guestlist.

Going Underground

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - BLA @ 12:08 pm

This Saturday it’s all about the Museum Night Fever for us, off course. Thanks for the tickets, Dieter, by the way. But it’s not the only thing happening in Brussels. Nope, it’s a big city that’s bubbling with action.

For those liking it a bit more on the Soul, Funk, Ska, Britrock and Mod’s tip, there’s the “Going Underground” night at the Churchill’s pub. With a live act this time.

WAY, coming all the way from Antwerp will be playing “Straight in ya face, guitardriven, powerpopped Britrock. Go figure … ”

The after party will be with SOULIGAN & MALIK

It’s free and last time I went it was fun. Recommended.

Dr. Kwest

Filed under: Music, New Ish - BLA @ 7:43 pm

Kalonji promotes it on Facebook, Lefto plays it on the Hop and Kissey Asplund Blogs about it. Made me check it out and it’s quite nice. And it’s Belgian. And it’s fresh. So we’re next in line to spread the word about Dr. Kwest’s Demo. Check it out.

This Friday

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - BLA @ 10:40 am

We’ll party in Amsterdam. “Changement de décor” like they say in French. First up the Appletree night at Bitterzoet with Kissey Asplund and Lefto. Then it’s time to experience one of my favourite DJ’s; Theo Parrish. Looking forward to that.

Anyone looking for tickets for Theo Parrish … I got 2 spare ones. Just drop me a mail and you can have them for the price I’ve paid them. (btw: Alex, did you get my mail ???)

And plans are to check Spinna at le BOZAR Saturday night. Quality weekend indeed.

1Love. Tribute Podcast

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 9:02 am

On 15/02 we danced at the last 1Love. party ever. A shame Soul Rebel decided to stop organising them. But understandable. He feels like he can’t invest the time needed to do things the right way. And the enthusiasm of the older days was a bit fading too. Something we feel at Onda Sonora sometimes too. The youngsters like them Electro beats more than the Soulful ish.

As a tribute to the great parties we had with dj’s like Charles Webster, Alton Miller, dj Genesis, Jovonn, Roy Davis jr, Rainer Trüby, Phat Phil Cooper, Nick Blow, Tom D, Rikkie, Soul Rebel himself and others I forget we serve you this Podcast. We were kinda residents playing at every single party if I remember correctly. The only other DJ who did the same (sometimes together with Lady Linn) was Belgium’s finest House soundboy Red D

The Podcast we’ve uploaded is Red D’s set at the last 1Love. party. He was warming up for Nick Blow and Rainer Trüby. That’s why the mix is a little less jacking than usual. But do not be fooled. It’s a top notch selection, sequenced with a lot of feel for balance and mixed with great skill. The way we know and like Red D. Enjoy & remember.

And sorry, no tracklist this time.

Stag Night

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - BLA @ 7:35 pm

My good friend Kris is getting married. Who would have thought that he would be the first of the extended Keep On crew ? Anyway because the wedding itself is in Portugal and because he wants to party with his friends over here one last time like in the old times he’s inviting everybody to this. Everybody who feels the funk is welcome. Like everybody who enjoyed his enthusiasm on the dance floor for years. We still miss him since he left for Lisbon.

Dj’s for the night will be Phil, Olivier, Kwak and Soulrabbi. More info about that last DJ / phenomenon here.

Entrance is free. It’s Kris’ treat.

Jazzbreak

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - BLA @ 7:34 pm

Jazzbreak sessions are starting again. Wednesday 27/02.

Thanks to Kwak for letting me know. Love the Tavernier events but promo-wise they stink big time. Haven’t seen a flyer and it’s not like I haven’t partied in Brussels last few weeks.

The Weekend Report

Filed under: Nightlife, Reviews - BLA @ 10:34 am

The series of nice weekends keeps on lasting. Friday was good. Maybe not a big crowd but a good vibe, nice gigs and lots of drinking (which compensated the lack of people). Big up to Plekz, De Predikanten, Vega and Proceed. And to everybody helping and dancing.

Saturday was a bit hectic but once the music started at De Kriekelaar it was all good. Very nice performance by Soul:ID. They really impressed me. Checking the CD as we speak but live it all sounded very on point. Also impressed by the venue. De Kriekelaar is much more than what I expected. And that in a positive way. The second group, Mongoose, was good too. It took me a while to get into the slightly more rock edge but the funny front woman and the tight band convinced me. Realised mid concert I’d seen them before. I guess in Leuven. The party afterwards was, against all expectations, very nice. Had a blast. Big up to Chris and Soul:ID, Mongoose, Dieter, Kwak and everybody at De Kriekelaar.

Headed for the city centre after that. It was Resto Henri’s 4th birthday and seeing that I hadn’t missed a birthday party since way back in Le Gibbereir days I had to be there. First time we didn’t provide the music. Something I’m totally cool with, by the way. It’s not like I want to play at possible party. I like to party in front of the desks as much as behind them. Certainly when the music is good. And Saturday night it was. DJ Bob played some ace tunes. It was good to see so many friends I hadn’t met in a while. Always good times at Henri. Big up to Jurgen, Sven, David, Manu, Geert, Daan, Waldo and the rest of the crew. And I definitely will come and check the Côte â l’os one of these days.

Red D Release

Filed under: Music, New Ish - BLA @ 1:10 pm

I kinda hinted Red D had plans. Well here’s the first part of that. There’s more but this should keep us warm for a while.

Red D will be releasing his second EP (first one is out on Scott Ferguson’s Ferris Park records). On Morse Records. A Belgian label. And although I like his first vinyl, this one sounds better and truer to his sound we know so well.

Sound snippets here.

Buy it. Support.

Deep Medi Musik

Filed under: Nightlife, Music, New Ish, Recommended - BLA @ 10:58 am

I’ll never state I’m well into Dubstep but I like it and I buy the stuff I really love. Being mostly from artists like Coki, Benga, Skream and alike on labels like Tempa and DMZ. But I left out an artist and label I almost adore. Mala and Deep Medi Musik. No need to say the 2 are connected. I buy most vinyl I can find of both. Can’t really put my finger on it why I dig them both and I won’t try to. Because I love the attitude of Mala and Deep Medi that in these times where you’re overloaded with info they want to keep it basic and let the music do the talking. And what it says is pure bliss. Check the label out. Which you can do live at Trix in Antwerp Saturday April 5th.

Stuff White People Like

A bit on a roll here serving you nice Blogs. This one is hilarious. Got to take it with a little humour but that should speak for itself. Maybe some people will be offended by it but they should stop drinking lemon juice with their breakfast. Anyway, some funny stuff up here.

Jack That Cat Was Clean

Filed under: Music, Knowledge - BLA @ 2:24 pm

Through the Blog about the record sleeves I’ve stumbled upon this one. About Mod Culture. I’ve got to admit that it is a prime example of me being a slacker sometimes because the link has been staring me in the face for quite some time. Because it’s written by a friend of mine who I respect a lot, I’ve seen it mentioned like tons of times before and still it took an unknown site to get me to check it. Shame on me.

Although I myself am not a Mod I do like the culture a lot and am influenced by it (although be it very shallow). I love the way Thierry (Steady Go!) and friends are into it. I’ve been stunned plenty of times by their collection, gear and behaviour. The most memorable one being at a Hammond Funk festival in the South of France with Thierry and seeing him dig up his stuff to iron his Cardin shirt before leaving for the festivities. Being the bum I am sometimes I take my old school Fred Perry’s right out of the machine and wear them. Easy.

The Blog itself goes deep into Mod culture. Trying to reconstruct the history of it in a decent way. It’s got info for hours to read. And it’s one of the top sources as it is being used by the BBC for a documentary on the Mods. Check it.

Where the Mod scene in Brussels is still alive it’s not so vibrant on the party front as it once was. There’s still the “Going Underground” parties at Churchill’s and one-offs here and there. There are plans to organise a monthly party but the much too familiar search for the right venue isn’t easy. If you know a small club with a wooden dance floor and a decent sound system in Brussels, let us know and we’ll inform them.

Record Envelope

Filed under: The Rest, Eyecandy - BLA @ 2:19 pm

I’m subscribed to tons of Blogs. Most of them are rarely interesting if I’m really honest. Only few blogs achieve greatness in (almost) all of their posts. I’m aware of the fact that this Blog itself isn’t bang on it for everybody with every post. That’s not our aim. Our aim is to inform those interested about what we do and what we like and support what we think is worth supporting. That’s a way too diverse aim to please everybody. But that’s no problem because you can ignore what’s not your cuppa. And the philosophy behind our Blog is that if you like Onda Sonora you’ll be interested in our Blog and vice versa. Onda Sonora is still our main focus and we keep that one sharp.

All the Blogs that are top all the time are very focused. They have one topic and keep to that rigorously. Like this one about record sleeves. It’s not really interesting unless you’re way deep into crate diggin’ but I like it as an inspiration for my graphic design projects. And just because I like the idea. It’s simple and fantastic. Always happy if I discover one like this.

The Blogs that I don’t like are mp3-Blogs (giving away other people’s music for free without their permission is something I can’t agree with plus it makes the hardcore digger in me go wild – making it way too easy to acquire those rare gems), copycat Blogs (people just copying other Blogs without mentioning them – give credit to your sources) and Blogs hopelessly trying to be cooler than others and losing the point completely (fairly common in design-minded Blogs). But I’m subscribed to some of these too. I lose my focus quite easily, I must admit.

Smirnoff Signature Series

Filed under: Music, New Ish - BLA @ 4:51 pm

Won’t drink 1 Smirnoff more because of it but like their signature mix series. Pairing 3 top MC’s with 3 ace producers. Q-Tip redoing ATCQ’s “Midnight” together with Dre, Common rebuilding “The Light” with Just Blaze and KRS One and DJ Premier doing a version of “Criminal minded”. That last one is already available to download for free. The others will be online in the next few weeks. Check’em out.

Got this from this very interesting Blog.

MFT EP1

Filed under: Music, New Ish - BLA @ 6:45 pm

I’ve always been a fan of Rude / MFT even if I’ve never been to their parties. Making the trip to NYC just to attend it is even a bit too wild for me. And I’ve been busy going to other places so it will take me a while before I get to attend one. The main reason why I like them so much is that they combine top quality music that’s difficult to categorise with graphics I like a lot. Since they begun releasing music I’m even more enthusiastic about them. That Taylor McFerrin 12″ being one of my favourite pieces of vinyl that I’ve acquired last few years.

Next up is a digital release from 2 artists that are unknown to me but do sound nice. Hadn’t expected anything else. Artwork is dope as always. Maybe I should reschedule some things and make the trip one of these days. But then again, lots of my friends are visiting New York this year and I’m born contrary. Next year maybe.

Check and download the release here.

Thank You For The Music

Filed under: The Rest, Rants - BLA @ 5:54 pm

Saturday at Cafe Bota was just as fine but with more people. When filled with men and women in for a good time it’s one of the best joints in Brussels. Good clean sound, beer at reasonable prices and room to wiggle your butt. Had fun with everybody I met. Good to see so many familiar faces. Great dj-sets from Rainer, Phil (always a pleasure to have him at a party), Nick and even a little Boddhi Satva. Anyway had a blast.

Thanks to all the usual suspects, to David (a shame it was the last 1Love. ever - enjoyed every single one of them), Red D (success with the plans - can’t wait to hear the results), Phil (see you in Southport), Rainer & family (Thanks for the music, the nice words about our parties and the fun - always a pleasure to have you) and Nick & family off course (I hope you can pull off what you promised us).

The great weekend ended with a bummer for me personally. Been knocked out stone cold by a throat infection. It makes one appreciate painless swallowing a lot. And didn’t know you need to swallow so much.

Less Activity

Filed under: The Rest, Rants - BLA @ 5:51 pm

Being a bit less active due to an aching throat that has been keeping me out of my sleep and the strong chemicals counteracting that. So Lefto beat me to big up Tawiah’s first release, I haven’t told you yet that you can listen to a mix by Rainer Trüby on the Back to Niceness show and I haven’t prepared some kick ass posts for this Blog nor the Podcast. I’ll see what I can do the next few days. By the end of the week I should be as good as new.
