Banging!

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Parties - BLA @ 11:18 am

Time to write a post about our own party; Go Bang!. Not really a review. I leave that to others. Rather a big shout out. Because for us it was fantastic. In our wildest dreams we hoped, but never really thought, we would gather such a number of people. I, personally, thought that would be something for the 3rd or 4th time, if all went well. But we’re already there. Which is nice because that way we don’t sponsor our wild plans too much ourselves and they suddenly don’t seem that wild anymore.

The nicest thing actually wasn’t the number of people but the vibe they sent out. Lots of dancing, lots of cheering, lots of hands in the air. Felt nice as a dj to get so much response. Made a big impression on the owner too. That’s the Southport Weekender spirit we love so much. Wasn’t expecting that we could bring this over so early. Gives us the confidence to keep on doing what we’re doing.

Because in a way it’s something new for Brussels. There’s Strictly Niceness, there’s Wonderful, there’s some other parties here and there with which we got a lot in common but, luckily, we got our own flavour. A flavour made of Funk, Disco, Soul and Hiphop like a lot of other parties but it’s got a big share of Soulful House in it too. And House is an electro / techy thing in Brussels and because of that rarely appreciated by the people who love the first genres I mentioned. Wasn’t sure combining all of that would work but apparently it does. Shouldn’t have doubted it though. “Respect” has always been a blast years ago and we’re not doing something far away from that.

Anyway. Go Bang! was good. Convinced us, convinced some others that we are doing the right thing. So expect more of this in the near future. Expect more of the dopeness we brought to Halle in Brussels. Expect some expansions to our universe outside the party area too.

Rest me to thank everyone who made this possible. First up all who helped us. The people who worked at the entrance for us. Thanks a lot. We organise the party and play at it but without you we would be nowhere. You do it for nothing else than a spaghetti and our appreciation and we know we should be very grateful for that. We are. Thanks to the people from Le Barrio. Thanks for the kind words afterwards. We love the venue. Thanks to all the dancers. As dj’s dancing is the best recognition we can get. Got it plenty on Saturday. Thanks to the extended Onda Sonora family for leading the dance floor. A party is so much nicer if you got your own little in crowd that knows the music and loves it. Works infectious on all others. Thanks to all who promoted us beforehand. Kwak and 72Soul from Strictly / Back to Niceness, Alex from On-Point, Dieter, Lefto, the Laid-Back crew, FM Brussel and a lot of others who put it on their blog or mentioned it to their friends. And thanks to all who sent us kind words of appreciation through Facebook, the Blog, mobile telephone or at the night itself. Made us feel good.

And last of all a personal thanks to Lieve en Yoeri. Because it’s so nice to be doing this with you for all those years. Go Bang! felt like Onda Sonora beginning all over again. Just what we needed. Very happy to be able to share this with you and to share the same mad ambition combined with the easy going attitude.

Pictures can be found on Facebook here. We’ll make a Flickr account with all the pics we can gather soon.

Up to the next one. News about that pretty soon here on this Blog.

Belgikolor, The Day After

Filed under: Nightlife, Reviews - BLA @ 11:49 am

Had a blast. Dope event, no doubt. Everyone was on top. Saw nice art (loved the triptych that turned out to be only 2 painting, Alex). Heard good music. And the set we played gave me confidence for tonight. The party where I ended was fun too. Only not sure about that lesbian story, Dieter.

Anyway, big up to Julien, Louis, Eric, Pat, Xavier and all others who made yesterday night so good.

Electric Elephant

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - BLA @ 11:51 am

Seeing that combining GP’s Worldwide festival in Sète and the Garden festival in Zadar will be difficult, not to say near impossible, I’ve been looking for alternatives for this summer. Without much success until this weekend. Talking to Trus’me made me go back to Zadar. Because the people who’ve been organising the Electric Chair parties in Manchester (a shame I never been to one) are doing something at the same venue / city and surroundings the Garden Festival.

Near the end of August, the weekend before Nottinghill Carnival. From 22/8 till 24/8. Electric Elephant. More info here. Like the concept too. Or at least the bits Trus’me told me. But if it’s organised by Electric Chair and it’s at this beautiful sunny village in Croatia then I kinda know enough. Going to be nice.

Anyone care to join me ?

Daru pt. 2

Filed under: Music, New Ish - BLA @ 9:39 pm

The name Daru might ring a bell with some. I’ve shown you the way to some free beats of him on the net, Benji B and others played it on the radio, 4Lux released a couple of nice 12’s and Kissey Asplund told you all to check his newest sounds on her blog.

Not going to tell you much more than he’s producing quality stuff. If you want more info, do your homework and check his Myspace. Then you’ll see he has put a new Mixtape online, for free, and like before it’s top notch must download music. He even got Marc Mac supporting him (and doing a remix that’s on the Mixtape). And that’s a quality certification that counts double. Check it.

Livingrooms

Filed under: The Rest, Eyecandy - BLA @ 11:04 am

Like I hoped for in this post somebody is collecting pictures from the livingrooms of Belgian DJ”s. Nice one. Big up to Hannes and the BloodyHornyCrew.

Send him the pics of your lvingroom if you’re a DJ with the answers to following questions:

Number of records in your collection ?
Ugliest record cover ?
Nicest record cover ?
Hottest electronic device you own ?
When did you start deejaying ?

Podomatic

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 10:07 am

We’ve reached the download limit on our Podomatic account this month. So no more downloading possible this week. I’ll upload the Disco Dalglish mix on Sendspace or something tonight and post the link here. Sorry for the inconvenience. But we’re getting too popular. Only kidding, that last bit.

EDIT: All fixed now … Podomatic runs smoothly again. Sorry for the needless drama.

Livingrooms and DJ’s

Found this link through Ffffound. Nice one. Somebody should make a Belgian version of this. Mine looks a bit like those of Ali from Tiefschwarz or DJ Koze.

Sorry

Filed under: The Rest, Rants - BLA @ 10:41 am

I sent the new mailinglist yesterday and made a beginners fault. By not using the “bcc” option. Very sorry for that. I’m a fool.

Radio’s for Congo

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Parties - BLA @ 2:50 pm

A little newsflash about our Easter Sunday party with Trus’me.

If you donate an old radio that still functions and works on batteries then you get in for free and get a free drink. It’s the little bit JH Eenders and we are doing for the “Radio’s for Congo” charity event FM Brussel is organising these days. They are collecting old radio’s to support a Congolese radio station and the people there. Because radio’s are not only about music but are vital sources of information for them.

So bring us the radio you never use and it will serve you one last time. To get in for nothing and to get you your first beer for free. We’ll bring them to the FM Brussel offices and they will send them to Africa.

JMB

Filed under: Music, New Ish - BLA @ 12:41 pm

Talked about Yaw already, Phenom is another talent from Chicago and if you don’t know Ron Trent, well, you need to do some studying urgently. Together they bring magic. JMB is the name under which Ron Trent produces more Hiphop oriented beats, Phenom is the MC featuring on the few tracks you can check on Myspace and Yaw adds the Soul singing. You might have heard their music in the more forward thing radio shows around (you should know by now which ones that are). Anyway, check out their Myspaces for more info and sounds. That “What is Love” song is addictive.

Portishead

Quite like this new Portishead song. Simple, dark en good. More info here.

Expo ‘58

Filed under: The Rest, Eyecandy - BLA @ 7:29 pm

It has been 50 years since the world expo made a stop in Brussels. Expo ‘58 has a near legendary status in Belgium, rightfully. Never has there been so much cutting edge Modern architecture than in those days. Many new things now common good were introduced back then. From food to appliances.

Biggest rest of it all is the Atomium. Since it has been renovated certainly at night super dope. In and around it there will be a lot of events for 50th birthday of the Expo ‘58. You can find all info on this Blog. One of the nicest ones will be the pavilion of temporary happiness. The title alone is genius but the construction is something nice too. Made out of beer crates. It will house an exhibition about the expo.

It’s a bit busy at the Onda Sonora HQ so not too many posts about new music and stuff. With two parties ahead it’s all about making promo. And so is the Trailer for Belgikolor you all need to see. Check their site and click on the trailer thingy in the right upper corner. And donwload the HD version. Very nice work.

Jazzbreak / Wonderful

Filed under: Nightlife, Recommended - Administrator @ 1:00 pm

Although their promo isn’t up to what it should be they deserve some props and support for the good music they always bring. Jazzbreak has started a few weeks ago and so will Wonderful this Saturday. This Wednesday it’s the Sandra Nkake Band from France who’ll be playing at Tavernier with dj’s Cris Prolific and Brown’Mo afterwards. Saturday the Wonderful Live band will play there followed by dj’s Brown’Mo and Lefto. Don’t know much about the bands but know the dj’s are top. And talking to Cris and Lefto is always nice. So I’ll be there.
