Greg Wilson Essential Mix

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 6:15 pm

If you are anything like us and like 80’s Electro Boogie this is a truly essential mix. Almost any mix by Greg Wilson is that. I’ve seen the man for the first time at work last year and enjoyed every bit of it. Discovering him opened up a world I’ve been happily lost in ever since. The music he’s famous for is maybe the niche of the musical spectrum I love the most. To the point I even buy the not even remotely decent releases because there’s always at least 10 seconds I really like on them. Haha.

Head for the essential mix he did for BBC Radio 1 and enjoy.

54Kolaktiv Podcast Mix

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Music, Podcasts, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 2:45 pm

About time I get blogging again. So much to tell you. First up is a mix we’ve done for 54Kolaktiv, a group of people, from Brussels, with an interesting take on music, art and more. We don’t need much extra to be enthusiast to add our 2 cents to that. This in the form of a 90 minutes mix of deep disco, raw house and lots of in between stuff. Hope you enjoy it.

Although I had spotted them before, 54Kolaktiv wasn’t a household name in Onda Sonora circles before we were contacted to do this mix. Hope we can begin to set that straight with this. It’s good to see there’s a wide range of things going on in the musical underground of our city. Not minding boundaries between genres too much, which we like off course. They remind me a bit of us when we started. Only less amateurishly than we were. Anyway, we’re excited to expand our universe and that of those following us a bit. And hopefully we can do the same for them too.

Watch out for their next Mo’Yo’Fro party on the 27th of February. Another chance to get to know them. We’ll be there.

MacFly

Filed under: Music, New Ish, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 8:41 am

The next time I’m in Ghent I’m definitely going to visit the MacFly store that has just opened there. Looks like a neat place for dope music and stylish clothes. Big up to Dyno and all involved for embarking on an enterprise like this one in times as difficult as they are.

In their quest to be more than just another record / clothing store they are set to bring you some fresh sounds of their own. Through mixes, beat compilations and more. Nice. The first mix is one by Ducth beatmaker Sotu the Traveller who has made a blend of r&b and slow jams, mainly from the 90’s. Check it out.

Trus’me Podcast

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 8:22 pm

More Trus’me on this blog. Because you can never have enough. This time with a link to a Podcast mix and little interview on the nice Resident Advisor site. Lots of new Trus’me / Prime Numbers music. And a little word about the upcoming Disco 3000 festival. Keep early September free for that. Because it’s going to be something very special. But more about that soon. Enjoy the mix.

Soul Sender

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 10:39 am

Soul Sender, a German internet radio who’ve hosted a mix of us a couple months back have relaunched their site. Looking good. Check it out because they play a great selection of across the board Soulful music. And hopefully host some more of our mixes. Only shame is I speak so little German. None to be exact.

thanks to dj Eff for letting us know.

Kon On Southport

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 10:03 pm

Kon, best known if you put his name together with that of one Amir, has his own blog. On that he shares a few thoughts about Southport where he played. If his ride to the airport was a bit bumpy he can partly blame us for that because we spent the Friday night at the bar with his driver. Haha. There’s an ace mix for those loving the Kon & Amir sound (and I know a few who check this blog regularly) for grabs. Tasty one.

In The Danger Zone

Filed under: Music, Videos, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 4:05 pm

Benji B started putting live broadcasts form his Deviation nights online. With Dam-Funk’s 1 year anniversary session as the first. If you like Boogie this one’s a must. Keep a eye on the site for more.

One of the stand out cuts in the mix is Midnight Express’ “Danger zone”. A killer tune. Check the video above this post and agree. As you can expect this one is rather rare. If you want the original. Because it’s out on re-issue 12″. Check your favourite record dealer for one. A certain shop 2,5h north of Brussels might have some copies left.

Cheeba Cheeba bis

Filed under: Nightlife, Music, Recommended, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 7:58 am

What started as a comment on the Cheeba Cheeba post went on to live its own life on Facebook in the form of a group. A group fighting the stupid policy between botanique and cafe bota that the latter can’t book "live" gigs because that’s the former’s domain. Kinda lame reason, innit ? And adding a MicroKorg keyboard and microphone to spice up your dj-sets is considered enough to see it as a "live" gig. Would they have said to Grandmaster Flash ‘ok, you can spin records but those 5 furious MC’s can only open their mouth to order something at the bar" ??? A big, fat Biz Markie styled "Gatouttahere!" is appropriate, I would say.

But through lobbying, and maybe a little bit because of that Facebook activity, the MicroKorg has been cleared. And I honestly don’t think not having a mic will stop J to the C from singing and shouting. Haha. We’re up for a great night again. Mark my words.

What’s nice is that the Cheeba Cheeba guys have their own ringtone. What a way to promote your party. Genius. Find it here.

Anyway, hope to see you all at Cafe Bota from 11pm on this Friday.

To get you in the groove there’s this. Funky Bompa did some diggin’ in Santa Domingo last summer and mixed his 15 favourites together. Check out the story and mix here.

Detroit Beatdown

Filed under: Music, New Ish, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 3:47 pm

A lot of people never reached further than that Carl Craig mix of Theo Parrish’s “Falling Up” (a still heavily requested tune), but the Detroit Beatdown series has got a lot more to offer than that. The second volume should drop soon with  3 EP’s already out in the shops. And there’s some nuggets on them. We’ve been playing lots of tracks from it in our sets and radio show last few months.

Always deep, raw and soulful, always fresh, always surprising. Although it all sounds definitely Detroit it never sounds formulaic nor are the songs clones of one another. It goes from midtempo vocal grooves to funked up electro to techy House music. But always with that motor city flavour. The guys behind this are Mike Clark, Norm Talley and Delano Smith, together with the ever fantastic Third Ear label. Disco Dalglish met Mike “Agent X” Clark this summer in Detroit. Seeing the man at work in his home town and meeting some of the local heads down there. Hopefully this results in some more cats from the D paying Belgium a visit to spin some records.

More info about Mike Clark and a mix from the man on the Restless Soul podcast.

Go out and collect all Detroit Beatdown releases. They’re all good. And dig a little deeper and see what other things the featured artists have produced. It’s worth the effort.

Domu

Filed under: Music, Knowledge, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 10:26 am

I’m subscribed to a zillion blogs but, to be honest, most of them I hardly read. I just flip through them in search for the rare interesting item. But there’s one I really love reading. And it’s one with a lot of text, little useful info, no free mp3’s (well sometimes it is but mostly not) and no pictures whatsoever. I read it because it are very funny tales about the life of an underground dj / producer. Written by Dominic Stanton aka Domu. Always reminds me we should ask him to play at our night. He’s tight behind the decks and I think he would connect well with our crowd.

Domu is filling in for Benji B, who’s off to the Red Bull Music Academy just like San Soda, next 2 weeks on the Deviation radio show

Ancienne Belgique

Filed under: Music, Knowledge, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 1:51 pm

Dieter said something about it on our radio show; the Ancienne Belgique, Belgium’s premier live venue, has renewed its website. From a simple informative site to something very web 2.0. With blogs, a community, videos and everything. They got, for example, entire concerts online for you to watch. Check it out.

Mad Mats Mix

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 11:53 am

We’ve given you the chance to witness Mad Mats’ impressive skills behind the wheels of steel both in our radio show and at our party. But because we are such fans of the man we don’t like to miss an opportunity to convince the world he’s a great dj and seen that he has uploaded a new mix on the Raw Fusion website we like to post about him again. Check it out.

DJ Nuts

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 11:38 am

In a world that would baffle me a lot less than this one does, one with less stupidity and more common sense, in that world DJ Nuts would be a superstar. This Brazilian DJ is relatively well-known among the in crowd of crate diggers and connoisseurs of the finer dj’s worldwide but outside of that small circle you’ll only see puzzled faces when mentioning his name. A shame. Mainly because today dj’s are more renowned by their productions instead of their skills behind decks before a crowd.

But it’s never too late to try and model the world a bit more like you want it to be. As a first action towards that I’ll hook you up with a great source of mixtapes by dj Nuts. If you like Brazilian music, funk, incredible mixing skills and mixes that ooze pure fun than this is a must check. And spread the word.

Funner Than Leather

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 10:06 am

People Under The Stairs are about to drop a new album called FUN DMC. Always something to look out for. One of the most underrated Hiphop acts I think. Love Thes One’s beats. Always so funky. Double K always comes hard. Together you got one of tightest teams you could wish for.

To announce their next release they give away this mixtape. Love the oldskool vibe of it.

2 My Beat

Filed under: Music, Knowledge, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 11:39 am

Blaze’s Kevin Hedge isn’t somebody to limit himself to making music only. He’s a DJ, label owner, party organiser and much more. You’ll hear about it in the interview we did with them. But as we take our time to bring you the result of our chat with Blaze in the best possible way, you’ll have to wait a little while for that. But it will be worth the wait.

In the meantime you can keep yourself more than busy with this. One of Kevin Hedge’s projects is the 2MyBeat.com site. This aims to promote Soulful music in all its forms (or Global Soul as he calls it). You’ll find on the site mixes, downloads, videos, links and more. A nice way to discover tons of information and music. With the possibility to buy what you like through Traxsource.

Check it out.

De Hop

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 7:22 am

De Hop, our favourite Belgian radio program (except our own off course, haha) started its 9th season on Studio Brussel yesterday. Big up to Lefto and GUS. To make it even more exciting Lefto plays one of our edits in the beginning of the show. Nice one. Thoroughly appreciated. And success with the new season and the plans for it.

Read all about it, in Dutch but with play list, here.

And while you’re at it, check the new releases on the Moodclub Music label. There’s a second EP coming out soon.

Jose James vs Jeff Neve

Filed under: Music, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 9:25 pm

The live recording for the Neve radio show on Klara was dope. Jose James being the central guest, bringing some songs live with Belgian pianist Jeff Neve and giving a nice interview. Really nice concept for a radio show. Nice to hear Wikke’s dad too dropping some Jazz knowledge. Thanks to Lefto for slipping me in on a last notice tip.

The show will be aired on Friday May 30th. And from then on it will be available on the listen again / herbeluister section of the site.
