Every initiative to educate people about Disco and House music gets my full support. Yiannis told me about this movie project and it looks like it could be something great. The little teaser video is already nice. Larry Heard making some valid points.
Good thing about the people at 1Xtra not cutting their shows very precisely is that I always catch the last song of Robbo Ranx’ show. Discovered this Shaggy tune that way and I absolutely adore it. Orchestral Dancehall. Gotta be honest, didn’t see it coming. But love it.
Haven’t got the faintest idea of this one is already huge in the charts. Should be. But so far off from the mainstream I don’t know.
I understand only half of it but this is a nice documentary about Waxpoetics with interviews with Andre Torres, Amir and others. Check it out. And be sure to pick up the latest edition of this excellent magazine.
The always impeccable DJonTV.com bring you an interview with House legend Lil’ Louis. If you don’t know him you’re in need of some serious schooling. Absolute legend. Check.
Although being short I like the video. I need more of this on TV and related media.
If you’ve ever been in NYC you’ve seen this. A pair of sneakers hanging on a telephone wire. I’ve heard lots of theories but apparently the why of it is still a mystery. Some filmmakers have taken it upon them to solve this. Check out the trailers here. Featuring the walking sneaker encyclopedia Bobbito Garcia. Through Shook Mag. RSS that blog, by the way. Full of intersting knowledge.
It’s been a while since I’ve looked forward to watching something on the TV but tomorrow, Tuesday, at 22h15 I’ll be watching Belpop on Canvas. It’s about Lou Deprijck, with interviews with his Two Man Sound coleagues Sylvain Vanholme and Pipou. That last one being the sole person who has made music in the 70’s and 80’s that I love and heard me play a dj-set. That’s got to mean something.
The entire Pipou fanclub will be watching it together. The president of that, one Phil H., promised to make something to eat. Knowing him it’ll be in some liquid form. With rum in it.
Anyway, watch it if you can. It will be mostly in Dutch with interviews in French.
Benji B started putting live broadcasts form his Deviation nights online. With Dam-Funk’s 1 year anniversary session as the first. If you like Boogie this one’s a must. Keep a eye on the site for more.
One of the stand out cuts in the mix is Midnight Express’ “Danger zone”. A killer tune. Check the video above this post and agree. As you can expect this one is rather rare. If you want the original. Because it’s out on re-issue 12″. Check your favourite record dealer for one. A certain shop 2,5h north of Brussels might have some copies left.
I’ve seen some crazy MPC action by Jeremy Ellis / Ayro but this beats it all (pun not intended). Discovered it through the great DJ Day blog. They invented the words “Mad skills” for things like this.
A video about NYC clubs. Irritating choice of music but otherwise nice work. By DJSounds. Be sure to check the video they made about last Saturday’s 10DaysOff. Thanks to Rikkie for the link.
Bare in mind it’s 1991, he’s playing on a rotary mixer and has no crossfader. Pretty wild shit. Don’t really dig what Mauricio Ponce is doing now but back then he was hot.
The more I hear it the more I get hooked to it. Roots Manuva’s “Buff Nuff”. Hilarious clip. Reminds me of his classic Witness video. Can’t wait to see him live.
You probably have seen some of them already but now they are all neatly gathered on Youtube. I’m talking about Alex On-Point Deforce’s video interviews. With FS Green, Flying Lotus, Ame, Baloji, Soul:ID, Soil & Pimp, … . Some dope and inspired DYI musical journalism filling the gaps left by the more mainstream media.
