Padcast Mix: DJ Xogn – African Boogaloo

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 2:03 pm

Second edition in our new Podcast series for which we’ve asked friends that influenced us to contribute a mix. Check it here.

DJ Xogn only stepped into our world recently but he managed to make a big impression nevertheless. He is a collector, record merchant and DJ who spent a part of his live in Dakar, Senegal. There he was DJ at the Koulgraoul parties. That alone should be reason enough to ask him to do a mix. But there’s more. The few times we saw him at work, he dropped so much unknown gems that I didn’t even bother to ask him about it. I would have been stalking him constantly and, as a DJ myself, I know that’s irritating. Asking him to contribute to this series of Podcasts seemed like a better idea. He made an African funk mix that consists, apart from that Matata track, of tunes I haven’t heard before. A collection of raw, funky grooves that work infectious on the hips.

Can’t give you much links of ways to contact him but we can always forward any questions. Just send us a mail if you need more info.

If want to check the man at work, that’s possible. He plays alongside DJ ReeDoo, at Cafe Bota Stereo on Friday the 6th of February. The day before our night

Like last time I’ve made a cover for when you burn it on CD.

Podcast Mix; Nick Blow - Ode To Freedom

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 9:36 am

Although we are both very active on the Mixtape front we’ve asked some friends to make a mix for us to put on our Podcast page. All of them are people we respect a lot and have influenced us musically and often even beyond that. Not all are as hardcore dj’s as we are. Some of them are (mainly) collectors or simply lovers of good music. The common factor is that we have crazy respect for their knowledge and / or skills. Some of them have influenced us more than the Benji B’s, Theo Parrish’s or Dimitri From Paris’ of this world.

First one in this series is a mix made by Nick Blow. An Englishman living in Brussels who’ve we met a couple a years ago through our common love for quality Soulful parties (he’s a Southport Weekender legend). Since then we’ve been slowly discovering his vast knowledge of the music we adore, his many experiences and friends. He has introduced us to Rainer Trüby, Phil Cooper, Blaze, Boddhi Satva and Roger Sastre for example.

When we were invited into his record room early this year, more than a little impressed, we didn’t have to think twice about asking him if he could make us a mixtape. The result is a very nice vocal House mix that’s been on constant repeat ever since I’ve got it. Schooling us again.

A big thanks to Nick for the mix and everything else. And a big up to the Blow family. All loving the good music as much as we do.

If you’ll burn this mix on a CD you can download a sleeve design here.

Track List:
Lonesome Echo Production featuring Byron Stingily - Sweet Dream (Disorient)
Amp Fiddler - Eye to Eye / Unreleased Kenny Dope mix (Camp Amp)

Wally’s Groove World / Garage Mix

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 8:41 pm

The news that the legendary USA Import record shop in Antwerp is closing made me  a bit sad last week. Not that I visited it a lot but I hate to lose those few places that still sell vinyl. That’s why I decided to, even more than I did before, share my sources. The places where I find my dance floor gold. This blog sometimes seems like a promo tool for Rush Hour already and Disco Dalglish has hinted more than once you need to visit the Record Collector in Antwerp plus we have  a permanent post about all good shops we frequent but I’ll take this all up a notch.

There’s a shop I want to give some extra shine. Wally’s Groove World in Antwerp. My main source for classic House vinyl. With an internet site so everyone who reads this is able to buy records there. Koenie has shitloads of bloody good House records in his cellar. Most are so dirt cheap it’s ridiculous. Really. I’ve found some of the 12”s I cherish most for under 5 euro in this shop. To prove my point I’ve recorded a mix with records I picked up at Wally’s, all for 15 euro and often much less.

It’s a Garage / New Jersey House kinda mix. This because I wanted some coherence. But don’t think it’s specialised in this genre. It has all kinds of House. From more techy sounds over soulful to that raw Detroit or Chicago shit. Go visit it and buy plenty of vinyl. But leave some for me. And feel free to share your sources. It’s a way to keep them alive.

And I’ve tried to make this Podcast as informing as possible. With all info included in the file itself. Like Disco Dalglish always does. Check it out in your iTunes player.

Track List:
Masters At Work – I Can’t Get No Sleep / The Low Down Mix (Cutting Records)
Lil’ Louis & The World – Nyce & Slow / The Luvbug (FFRR)
Absolute – Introduce Me To Love / Original Mix (Buzz)
Mass Order – Lift Every Voice (Take Me Away) / Uplift The Race Mix (Columbia)
Lachandra – Just Started / Start It Up Mix (Movin’)
Turntable Orchestra – You Gonna Miss / Funky Sax Mix (Republic)
Bridgett Grace – Love To The Limit / Extended Vocal Mix (Happy)
Susan Clark – Deeper / Kaoz House Mix (FFRR)
Christopher McCray – Why Do You Wanna Do This To Me / Album Version (Madhouse)
CeCe Rogers – All Join Hands / Dub (Atlantic)

54Kolaktiv Podcast Mix

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Music, Podcasts, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 2:45 pm

About time I get blogging again. So much to tell you. First up is a mix we’ve done for 54Kolaktiv, a group of people, from Brussels, with an interesting take on music, art and more. We don’t need much extra to be enthusiast to add our 2 cents to that. This in the form of a 90 minutes mix of deep disco, raw house and lots of in between stuff. Hope you enjoy it.

Although I had spotted them before, 54Kolaktiv wasn’t a household name in Onda Sonora circles before we were contacted to do this mix. Hope we can begin to set that straight with this. It’s good to see there’s a wide range of things going on in the musical underground of our city. Not minding boundaries between genres too much, which we like off course. They remind me a bit of us when we started. Only less amateurishly than we were. Anyway, we’re excited to expand our universe and that of those following us a bit. And hopefully we can do the same for them too.

Watch out for their next Mo’Yo’Fro party on the 27th of February. Another chance to get to know them. We’ll be there.

The ‘Show Business Maghis’ Podcast

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - Disco Dalglish @ 1:19 pm

We ‘ve uploaded a new podcast episode. This time it is diggin’ in the history (and mistery) of a Belgian disco dj in the 70’s and 80’s.

Who or what is ‘Show Business Maghis’? I found a lot of records with ‘Show Business Maghis’ stamps on it during my last two diggin’ sessions in Antwerp. Seems like a 70’s / 80’s Belgian (mobile) disco dj with good taste sold (a part of) his collection. Got the dude’s name and previous adress but can’t get any closer to that for the moment. I ‘d like to meet this guy if possible and do a little interview about the party scene, record stores, his inspiration,…way back. If any of you could get us in touch, let us know.

About the playlist. It ranges from midtempo disco to uptempo boogie, from Tee Scott to François Kevorkian productions, from New York over London to Italy, from very common records to rare. Anyway, enjoy this selection of the previous ‘Show Business Maghis’ collection!

Podcast: Uplifting Mix

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 4:59 pm

A bit on the euphoria of Southport Weekender / our set at Fuse I recorded a mix a bit like what you can expect in the Powerhouse main room there / what we played in our set on Monday night. Not the usual deepness nor rawness. Nope, some hands in the air polished vocal House. Actually the stuff we used to play when we started more than 8 years ago. Not that is a mix full of oldies. Nope, some new(ish) releases in it too.

I recorded this also because I need to school some friends of mine a little more. The ones that keep asking to play more “classics”. Or keep asking me to play “Days Like This’ or “Jaguar”. Not that I don’t like these tunes but I’m tired of playing them. I think / hope they mean I need to play some more accessible music from time to time. A remark I can live with. Although I’ll never stop pushing those deep & dirty sounds, I don’t mind incorporating some main room House in my sets (and I was glad to hear Rick Wilhite has that same philosophy). If it’s good music I’ll play it.  And as a dj you need to play for the dancers so I’ll keep those comments in mind when playing in the future.

And because I’m rearranging my collection I rediscovered some beauties. Some are in this mix, some you can expect in my sets.

I want to dedicate the mix to Karl. To cheer him up. A first class bastard crashed into his parked car and fled. That’s low. Hope this will get his mind off things a bit.

Track List:
Luther Vandross – Are You Using Me? (EMI)
Mark Grant Feat. Russoul – Guessing Again (SubUrban)
Ron Hall & The Muthafunkaz feat. Mark Evans – The Way You Love Me / Dim’s T.S.O.P. Version (Defected)
Puzique – Nice-N-Tight (Soulfuric)

Karizma feat. DJ Spen – 4 The Love (Code Red)
Teddy Douglas feat. Margaret Grace – Watcha Gonna Do / Muthafunkaz 12” Remix (Code Red)
Koffee Brown – Where Da Party At? / Bootleg Remix (White)
Kerri Chandler / Roy Ayers – Good Vibrations / Kerri’s Mad Mix (Mad House)
P.B. & Company feat. Yvonne Brown – I’m In Love / Pound Boys Jazzin’ Dub (SubUrban)

Deep & Dirty Podcast

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 4:11 pm

I decided to record a quick little mix before I’m off to England. A rather dark, techy one. Must say most of the +120bpm records I buy these days are more of the Detroit influenced pack than the NYC one. This mix is a selection of vinyl I picked up lately with a classic thrown in for good measure. But most of it is released in 2008. Enjoy.

Track Listing:
Ravel – Movement 1 & 2 (Recomposed by Carl Craig & Moritz Von Oswald) / Deutsche Grammophon
Pepe Bradock – Mandragore / Atavism
Motor City Drum Ensemble – Raw Cuts # 3 / Raw Cuts
D’ran, D’ran, Dr’an – D’ran / Rockwell
Morgan Geist – Detroit (C2RMX1) / Environ
Discreet Unit – Unit / Prime Numbers
San Soda – Got Me Jumpin’ In My Car / We Play House
Arto Mwambé – Une Seule Nuit (Mix De Danse) / Brontosaurus
Jona – Secret 47 / Planet E
MJ Cole – Sincere ( Jazzanova Sincerely Yours Remix) / Mercury
Exchange Bureau meets John Arnold – Spookie Dookie / Third Ear
Koss – Earth (AME Remix) / Mule

Phil Asher Podcast

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 11:17 am

After a very long inactivity we’re Podcasting again.

To get you all prepared for our next GO BANG! party with as special guest Phil Asher I’ve recorded a mix with only his (co-)productions and remixes. After being astonished how many records I have with his name on I made a selection of essential tracks and / or personal favourites. It still turned out to be a massive amount of music. So the mix is more than 100 minutes long but I couldn’t leave out any songs without feeling I didn’t do my job properly. Sorry for those who can’t play mp3’s in their car stereo. You’ve got to split it yourself. Anyway, I tried to incorporate as many sides of Phlash’s music as I could. Slow, soulful and more broken or techy. Enjoy.

And don’t forget to come and dance at Biberium the 29 th of November.

Tracklist:
Blaze – I Think Of You / Restless Soul Inspiration Information Remix (Slip ‘N Slide)

Radio Show / Podcast

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts, Radio Show - BLA @ 1:57 pm

Slowly our radio show is becoming more mature. First we needed to get accustomed to all the faders and knobs. Now that we are past that, we’re going to introduce some new items and invite more guests. Expect Red D & San Soda, Home Run, Phil Asher & others to pay us a visit in the weeks to come to talk about their music. Expect more info about our music. Expect more fun. Always interesting to have some chemistry between us and our guests.

Don’t hesitate to give us feedback, by the way. Good or bad. We like to know what you think or what you would expect. We’re open for suggestions. Mail us at ondasonora@fmbrussel.be

And I’m going to record a new episode for our Podcast this weekend. Dug up all the Phil Asher releases and productions out of my collection and selected some 20 tracks out of that surprisingly huge pile. To prepare you all a bit for our next Go Bang! party. Hopefully I get that uploaded by the end of the weekend.

Rare Groove Podcast

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 12:29 pm

Woke up this morning thinking; “hmm, what about a quick mix before starting the day”. Last 2 days of partying / dj’ing made me want to record a Rare Groove mix. Nothing fancy, just a dope selection, sequenced and mixed to a mix about an hour long. Selection and sequencing are fine but the mixing isn’t always all that on point. Mind I was awake for about 15 minutes when I started recording. Still, won’t rerecord it. Hope you’ll like it this way.

Here’s the track list:
Ben E. King – Street Tough
Leo’s Sunshipp – Give Me The Sunshine

Southport Podcast

Filed under: Podcasts - BLA @ 7:10 pm

Finally we got a new Podcast up on your page.

You can feel some pre-Southport stress hanging in the air when you meet the Onda Sonora family & friends these days. Preparing the trip, booking the ferry and the hotel for Thursday, … . Everybody nervous, everybody anxious to go. So lets throw some extra fuel on the fire with a mixtape. One to get prepared, one for the road.

I made a mix exclusively with tracks from artists that’ll play at Southport Weekender 42, except for one classic that almost made me weep last year when it was played in the Saturday afternoon session. It’s by an artist almost everybody would love to see playing live at the festival. But I guess it will stay a wild dream forever.

Anyway, with the live artists not yet announced the artists that are featuring on the mix are mostly dj’s with the exception of 2 who’s Myspace gives away they’ll be there. To keep it within the limits to make it possible to burn it on CD one artist, Zed Bias, which I had planned to play last, fell off. I had to do some serious editing on top of that to keep it under 80 minutes. So the mix is a tad longer than usually.

Here’s the playlist. I’ve put the SP link within brackets :
Eric Roberson - Couldn’t Hear Me (artist performs live)
The Sunburst Band - U Make Me So Hot (Joey Negro project & group I hope to see live once at SP / DJ)
Soul II Soul - Jazzie’s Groove / New Version (Jazzie B with the Soul II Soul Soundsystem will DJ)
Mr Scruff - Shelf Wobbler (DJ)
Restless Soul - Let Your Feelings Show (Phil Asher production / DJ)
Le Pamplemousse - You Can Get Of One Music (DJ Rahaan edit / DJ)
Stevie Wonder - If You Really Love Me (that classic and most wanted live artist)
Alistair Colling vs Tortured Soul - When You Find Your Love … Hold On (Tortured Soul perform live)
Joe Claussell - Kryptic Elements (DJ)
Snowboy - Casa Forte / Joe Claussell’s Spiritual Life Samba Remix (Snowboy and Joe Claussel / DJ)
Francesco Tristano - The Melody / C2 Remix (C2 aka Carl Craig / DJ)
Theo Parrish - Second Chances (DJ)
Phil Asher & Friends - Revolution=Solution (DJ)
Kerri Chandler - So Let The Wind Come (DJ)
Quentin Harris - Let’s Be Young (DJ)
Recloose - Maui’s Lament (DJ)
DJ Spen - Craze at Midnight (DJ)
Erro - Change For Me / Joey Negro Mix (Erro = Eric Roberson / live, Joey Negro / DJ / Southport hands in the air classic)

Thanks to Alex for noticing it.

Onda Sonora on On-Point.be - Disco Dub Mix

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Music, Podcasts, Mixes & Podcasts - BLA @ 7:59 am

The ever wicked On-Point.be people have put a dope mix online. One we made. Haha. A mix exploring the zone between 2 seemingly unrelated genres. Reggae and Disco that is. But in the early eighties and certainly in the melting pot New York City was back then, these two styles of music were very influential to each other. People like Larry Levan and François K incorporating Dub techniques into their remixes and Sly & Robby working with Gwen Guthrie and Grace Jones. For example. We tried to dig up some gems of that era, added some other obscurities and music that has fused the vibes of Kingston, London and New York City.

The mixing may be a tad sloppy every now and then but if Disco isn’t all that steady tempo wise with the live drumming and all then the added Jamaican flavours won’t help for sure. But it’s the vibe that counts. Hope you like the mix. Props to Alex and JC for giving us the theme and platform. Always quality work.

Basement Boogie

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 8:23 pm

Made a mix to prepare you all for the Trus’me party (23/3) and the later hours of Go Bang! (29/3). It’s a selection of Detroit and old school New York influenced House. Deep, Raw & Sexy.

Slipped in some new stuff from, among others, Theo Parrish, Trus’me, Pepe Bradock, Dan Electro and Mike Dunn, some classics I’m really fond of, some Trus’me joints that are not on the album and a tune from the first release on his own label and some other nice things for good measure.

Hope you like it. And if you do, hope to see you at one of our parties.

And try to catch a copy of the Mix Disco Dalglish has been handing out to everyone nice to promote the Go Bang! party. It’s more of this quality deepness.

1Love. Tribute Podcast

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 9:02 am

On 15/02 we danced at the last 1Love. party ever. A shame Soul Rebel decided to stop organising them. But understandable. He feels like he can’t invest the time needed to do things the right way. And the enthusiasm of the older days was a bit fading too. Something we feel at Onda Sonora sometimes too. The youngsters like them Electro beats more than the Soulful ish.

As a tribute to the great parties we had with dj’s like Charles Webster, Alton Miller, dj Genesis, Jovonn, Roy Davis jr, Rainer Trüby, Phat Phil Cooper, Nick Blow, Tom D, Rikkie, Soul Rebel himself and others I forget we serve you this Podcast. We were kinda residents playing at every single party if I remember correctly. The only other DJ who did the same (sometimes together with Lady Linn) was Belgium’s finest House soundboy Red D

The Podcast we’ve uploaded is Red D’s set at the last 1Love. party. He was warming up for Nick Blow and Rainer Trüby. That’s why the mix is a little less jacking than usual. But do not be fooled. It’s a top notch selection, sequenced with a lot of feel for balance and mixed with great skill. The way we know and like Red D. Enjoy & remember.

And sorry, no tracklist this time.

Rikkie’s Soulful House Mix

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - Disco Dalglish @ 6:22 pm

Check this new episode on our podcast. As we support local talent, we also support our local heroes. And this dj is definitely on top of that list. The man’s been spinning house records for nearly two decades and that’s a whole lot in the history of the genre. He was a model when I started buying records and deejaying at a young age and he still is ten years later. I remember looking forward to play my first gig ever with him.

We ‘re always pleased to invite this guy to our parties. He‘s a dj pur sang. He reads a dance floor, selects top tunes, knows his classics and delivers every time. And behalf of that, he’s a good friend who’s always in for a joke.

I’m convinced he’s responsible for bringing soulful house to Halle. In doing so, he influenced us a lot in what we do today. That includes both Onda Sonora and 1Love. This guy deserves a whole lot of respect and we are proud to present his latest mix on our podcast. Enjoy it. I do.

House Mix

Filed under: Onda Sonora, Podcasts - BLA @ 10:20 pm

A proper banging House mix. Raw & Deep, just like we love it. That was something this Podcast was lacking up until now. It’s what we like to mix when the dance floor is decently warmed up and ready for the heavier stuff. So I decided to record one. No big concepts, no deep diggin’ in my own collection to unearth some obscure gems that deserve some shine. Nope, I just started mixing with my crate from the last party and some freshly acquired plastics next to me and went with the flow. Enjoy.
